Big Island HawaiiBig Island Navigation The Big Island is a very unique island: It has an active volcano, a green sand beach, 11 of the 13 different world climates, the world's tallest mountain and the world's biggest mountain. Most visitor's stay on the Kona side of the island, which is the dryest and has the nicest beaches, but the Hilo side has its own wild beauty for the adventurous. The Big Island is actually named Hawaii, and the entire island chain is named for it, but in order not to get to confusing, the island is practically always referred to as the Big Island by resident and visitor alike. It has this name because of how large it is - large enough to fit every other major island inside of it. The Big Island is not known for its beaches, but there are a few really nice ones, like Hapuna Beach, Kaunaoa Beach, and Anaehoomalu Beach. Another favorite of mine is Punaluu Black Sand Beach. Big Island Hotels and RentalsThe best bargain lodging on the Big Island will be vacation rentals or bed and breakfasts in the Hilo and Puna areas, with some good finds also in Kau and Honokaa. The hotels in Hilo are also not a bad deal, but they are far from the Kona side, if that is what you are looking for.The most expensive lodging is the luxury hotels along the Kohala coast, which are built like little islands with their own beaches and everything else you need among a sea of old lava. If you do stay in one of these hotels, be sure and get out a few times or you'll miss what the Big Island has to offer.
